It is our view, after taking many factors into account, that YES you should start ASAP. But let us look as some of the factors.
Is your live site brand new and empty? If so, then this is one instance that I would recommend waiting. Just until you get some content up and live. Google will eventually crawl your site and you don't want them to find an empty one and then not want to come back for a while. It is looking for content and links and if it finds none then it will slow down their crawl rate. We don't want that. Click here for more info on Why SEO should be important to you.
However, if your site is live but still being built but you have a good portion of your content going up, say at least 50% or so, then Google will find it and start to crawl it and if it keeps changing then all the better. The main reason we say it is a good time to start this is that Google is not going to spider your site the instant we want it to. Their spiders run on a secret schedule and we can't decide when it will find our sites. Mostly, Google can't find your site if there is no one linking to it. Google is pretty good but they can't find a site unless others have linked to it. You are invisible to them until they find links. So the sooner it finds it and starts to crawl it the better. When we start your SEO campaign we start building links from day one.
Another reason for starting now is because your SEO is not a quick process. We can't just 'blast' out a bunch of links because Google sees this and can penalize it because not many new sites go from zero to 100's of links in a day or two. It has to be a slow, natural growth of links and content.
What is Google looking for?
Backlinks!
A backlink is a hyperlink from one website to another. If the other website does not have a hyperlink back to your site, it is called a one-way backlink. If it does link back its a two-way backlink which is ok but not as valuable. We call backlinks spider food. Google 'spiders' the web looking for them and indexes them.
Backlinks aren't everything but they are the most important factor that Google uses to rank sites by the keywords. For example, if abc.com links to xyc.com then xyc.com gets a backlink which is seen by Google as a vote. Simply put, the more votes around the internet that Google finds to that site the better it will get ranked. To get even more powerful 'votes' we use what's called anchor text which is just web geek for using a keyword in a link like Best SEO Company in Ohio.
